Batteries: A Strategic Asset for National Security

For years, the public conversation surrounding batteries has centered almost exclusively on electric vehicles and consumer electronics. However, a quiet but urgent shift is occurring within corridors of power in North America and Europe, where batteries are being reimagined not just as industrial components, but as critical assets for national security. In a world of heightened geopolitical tension, these power cells have moved from the category of low priority commodities to essential munitions, sitting strategically alongside bullets and missiles in the eyes of defense planners.

The scale of this dependency is staggering when viewed through the lens of modern warfare. A single U.S. soldier on a three day mission can carry up to twenty pounds of batteries to power everything from night vision goggles and GPS units to encrypted radios. When scaled across an active duty force of over a million personnel, the requirement reaches millions of pounds of batteries, excluding those needed for drones and larger military hardware. This realization has led the U.S. government to take aggressive action, including explicit bans on sourcing battery cells from China through 2031 to ensure that vital equipment isn’t dependent on a primary adversary during a conflict.

This pivot toward domestic resilience is sparking a massive wave of investment, though the economics differ wildly from the commercial market. While an electric vehicle battery pack might cost around 120 dollars per kilowatt hour, high grade defense cells can command prices upwards of 11,000 dollars for the same capacity because mission success outweighs cost concerns. Programs like the Drone Dominance Program are funneling billions into fielding hundreds of thousands of domestically produced attack drones, driving demand for high energy density chemistries that prioritize performance over price.

Despite this influx of capital, building a truly independent supply chain remains a daunting task due to China’s overwhelming grip on midstream processing. Nowhere is this vulnerability more apparent than with graphite, an anode material essentially ubiquitous in lithium ion batteries where China controls about ninety percent of global processing. Western governments are now racing to cultivate homegrown expertise and infrastructure to fill these gaps, recognizing that without a secure internal pipeline for minerals and manufacturing, true national security remains out of reach.
