Amy Bennett: Processing, Not Mining, Is Graphite’s Biggest Challenge

Industry expert Amy Bennett is shifting the conversation around the global graphite supply chain, arguing that the world has plenty of the mineral in the ground but lacks the infrastructure to make it usable. While much of the current geopolitical tension focuses on mining rights and securing raw deposits, Bennett suggests that the real bottleneck is the complex chemical processing required to turn raw flake graphite into the high purity spherical graphite needed for electric vehicle batteries.

The challenge lies in the fact that mining is only the first step of a long and environmentally demanding journey. To reach battery grade, graphite must undergo a series of purification and shaping processes that are currently dominated by a handful of facilities, mostly located in China. Bennett points out that without diversifying these midstream capabilities, Western nations risk simply swapping one dependency for another, moving from a reliance on foreign ore to a reliance on foreign refineries.

Beyond the logistical hurdles, the environmental impact of processing remains a significant sticking point. The chemicals used to purify graphite can be hazardous if not managed correctly, and the energy requirements for high heat treatment are substantial. Bennett believes that the industry must prioritize the development of sustainable, closed loop processing technologies if it hopes to meet the surging demand for green energy storage without compromising its own environmental goals.

Ultimately, the path forward requires a strategic pivot in how governments and investors view the critical minerals race. Rather than rushing to open new mines, Bennett advocates for a concerted effort to build localized processing hubs. By focusing on the chemistry and the engineering of the midstream, she argues that the industry can finally create a resilient supply chain that is truly independent and sustainable for the long term.
